Straight Teeth for the New Year

March 28, 2016Dr. Andre HughesInvisalign

Friends celebrate new year's eveWith 2016 just arriving, many Toronto patients make new year’s resolutions like us. Whether it’s to be more charitable, hit the gym, or eat better, everyone makes their own resolution to better their well-being. If your goal is to improve your oral health, one of the first things you can do is straighten your smile with orthodontics. But not just any orthodontics; discover the many benefits of Invisalign and why many patients are choosing this treatment over metal braces.

Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

Many patients worry that they won’t be able to keep their new year’s resolution when it comes to dental care. They feel that they may not have time for a lengthy procedure like metal braces, but know that they are in need of orthodontic treatment. This is where Invisalign comes in! These clear, plastic aligners are easy to manage and care for, but an even more attractive trait is that they offer a quicker treatment on average than metal braces. Where braces typically take two years or more, Invisalign can be completed in 12 to 18 months on average. This makes it easy for patients to commit to the treatment, knowing that they can expect a shorter treatment time than their peers with braces. It’s a new year’s resolution that you know can be completed.

Why Choose Invisalign Over Braces?

Invisalign also offers monumental benefits that braces can’t compete with. To start, many patients may have the misconception that Invisalign is not as effective because it’s made from plastic. However, Invisalign aligners are constructed from a durable type of plastic that can still shift your teeth into position. What makes this treatment work is the shape of the aligners themselves; with each new set of aligners you receive, your teeth are shifted into a new position with the aligner.

Invisalign aligners are also less irritating than braces can potentially be for patients. Metal brackets and wires are cemented to the surfaces of your teeth, and tend to stick out, sometimes catching your lips and cheeks on them. Patients in the past have accidentally cut their lips and cheeks on braces, especially if they were impacted in the face, such as during a sports game. But with Invisalign, you won’t experience such discomforts. Invisalign aligners lie flat against your teeth, so it doesn’t irritate your lips or cheeks and remains nearly invisible in your smile.

Invisalign aligners can also be a more enjoyable treatment to have, as you have the freedom to eat what you want without damaging your aligners (you remove them for meals). Braces have restrictions on what food you can eat, but Invisalign does not. You can enjoy eating what you love, without giving up on your new year’s resolution!
